Medical Requirements for Merchant Navy Service
All merchant navy personnel — officers, ratings, and cadets — are required to hold a valid DG Shipping medical fitness certificate before joining a vessel. This requirement applies to Indian seafarers serving on Indian-flagged vessels and those employed under Indian maritime law.
The examination is conducted by a DG Shipping approved medical examiner in accordance with the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000, and applicable STCW and MLC 2006 provisions.

- Masters, Chief Officers, Deck Officers (2nd and 3rd Officer)
- Chief Engineers, Second, Third, and Fourth Engineers
- Electro-technical Officers (ETOs)
- Navigation and Engineering Cadets
- Able Seamen (AB) and Ordinary Seamen (OS)
- Fitters, Motormen, Wipers, Oilers (Engine Ratings)
- Catering ratings and hospitality staff on vessels
- Pre-sea cadets joining maritime training institutes
