What is a Periodic Medical Examination?
The periodic medical examination is the renewal of the DG Shipping medical fitness certificate. Since the certificate is valid for 2 years (or less for certain conditions), seafarers must undergo a fresh medical examination before expiry to continue sea service.
A seafarer whose DG Shipping medical fitness certificate has expired cannot legally serve on a vessel. Schedule the renewal well in advance of the expiry date.
When Should You Renew?
- At least 4–6 weeks before your current certificate expires
- Before signing a new contract if the certificate will expire during the contract period
- As required by your employer or crewing agency
- When returning to sea service if your certificate has already expired
What the Periodic Examination Includes
The periodic examination includes the same comprehensive assessments as the initial medical: clinical examination, vision and colour vision tests, hearing test, blood investigations, urine analysis, chest X-ray, and ECG (for seafarers 40 and above).
Any changes in health status since the last examination are also reviewed. Bring records of any new conditions, surgeries, or medications.
Documents to Bring for Renewal
- Current DG Shipping medical fitness certificate
- CDC and passport
- Passport-size photographs
- Records of any new conditions, medications, or surgeries since the last examination
- Spectacles, contact lenses, or hearing aids if applicable
