What is a Pre-Sea Medical Examination?
The pre-sea medical examination is the initial DG Shipping medical fitness assessment conducted on a seafarer before they join a vessel for the first time, or after an extended break from sea service. It is mandatory under the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000.
The examination determines whether the candidate is medically fit to undertake duties at sea and must be conducted by a DG Shipping approved medical examiner.

What the Examination Includes
- Complete clinical examination — general health, cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, musculoskeletal
- Vision assessment — distance and near acuity, colour vision (Ishihara plates)
- Hearing assessment
- Blood investigations — CBC, blood sugar, LFT, KFT
- Urine routine examination
- Chest X-ray
- ECG (if aged 40 or above, or at examiner's discretion)
- Assessment of mental fitness for sea duty
